  • Osprey

    Osprey

The Osprey (Pandion haliaetus), one of the largest birds of prey in North America, and known to many as the "Fish Hawk," eats almost exclusively fish. The Osprey family contains only one species and it is one of the most widespread birds in the world, found on all continents except Antarctica. The Osprey readily builds its nest on manmade structures, such as telephone poles, channel markers, duck blinds, and nest platforms designed especially for it. Such platforms have become an important tool in reestablishing Ospreys in areas where they had disappeared. In some areas nests are placed almost exclusively on artificial structures. Ospreys are unique in that they will migrate while hold a fish in their talons, referred to by watchers as an OPAL - "Osprey Packing A Lunch." Unlike Bald Eagles, an Osprey can become completely submerged during its dive into the water as it can completely close its nostrils and still be able to fly away with its prey. Bald Eagles are usually limited to plucking fish at the surface of the water as they fly by. An Osprey has an outer toe that can face forward or backward and rough pads on its feet to hold slippery fish.
