The Gemsbok (Oryx gazella) is a type of Oryx. This African antelope is also called the Southern Oryx and the "Spirit of the Desert." Originally, various oryx species were found in all of Africa's arid regions. One species that occurred on the Arabian Peninsula was exterminated recently but has now been reintroduced into the wild from captive stock. Long, straight horns are present in both males and females, but injuries from fighting are rare. Well adapted to the conditions of their hot, arid habitats, oryx can live as long as 20 years. The Gemsbok has adapted to many areas that most large mammals are unable to live in. The Gemsbok prefers the arid and semi-arid open grassland, scrub and light open woodland. They are extremely acclimated for desert and semi-desert life and are experts at conserving water and can go long periods of time without drinking.
