Days 1-3 - June 23-25

Leaving Honolulu and sailing to Lahului, Maui then leaving Kahului, Maui ... Maui is the most visited of all Hawaiian Islands and is the second largest island in the Hawaiian chain. It is home to pineapple, sugar cane, cattle ranches, and rain forests. Kahului was a sugar town by 1880; however, real growth has only come during the last 20 years. Also of distinction is Haleakala, the largest dormant volcano in the world, consisting of 30,000 feet of hardened lava rising from the ocean floor capped by a huge crater. It is estimated that 50% of the world's humpback whales return to Maui's warm waters where they were born and to mate. Kahului is located on the northern coast of the island on Kahului Bay. Before the city of Lahaina, which is Maui's main city, became a thriving missionary and whaling village, it was the home of Hawaiian kings and queens. Often called the "jewel in the crown of Maui," it is the second most visited spot on Maui after the beaches.

Setting Sail from the Port of Honolulu

On September 11, 1926, after five years of construction, the world-famous Aloha Tower was officially dedicated at Pier 9 of Honolulu Harbor. The tallest building in Hawaiʻi at that time, the Aloha Tower became a guiding beacon welcoming vessels to Honolulu. Just as the Statue of Liberty greeted thousands of immigrants each year to New York City, the Aloha Tower greeted thousands of immigrants to Honolulu. By the time the Aloha Tower was dedicated, Honolulu was already a popular vacation destination for wealthy American and European families. They traveled on Matson steamers that docked at the Aloha Tower and were greeted by Hawaiian music, hula performers and lei. When the attack on Pearl Harbor came on December 7, 1941, Coast Guardsmen from the USCGC Taney were ordered to take up defensive positions around Aloha Tower. The Aloha Tower was painted in camouflage colors so as to disappear at night. (June 23, 2018)

Honolulu Harbor, also called Kulolia and Ke Awa O Kou, is the principal seaport of Honolulu and the State of Hawaiʻi in the United States. It is from Honolulu Harbor, that the City & County of Honolulu was developed and urbanized, in an outward fashion, over the course of the modern history of the island of Oahu. It includes Matson, Inc. harbors on Sand Island. (June 23, 2018)

    Sand Island - Honolulu

Sand Island, formerly known as Quarantine Island, also known as Kush Island is a small island within the city of Honolulu. The island lies at the entrance to Honolulu Harbor. It was known as Quarantine Island during the nineteenth century, when it was used to quarantine ships believed to carry contagious passengers.During World War II, Sand Island was used as an Army internment camp to house Japanese Americans as well as expatriates from Germany, Italy and other Axis countries living in Hawaii. The camp opened in December 1941, soon after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and the subsequent mass arrests of civilians accused — often without evidence — of espionage or other fifth column activity. Over 600 Hawaiian residents, many of them U.S. citizens, would pass through Sand Island before it was closed in March 1943. Most of the internees had been transferred to Army and Department of Justice internment camps on the mainland beginning in February 1942; the remaining 149 were moved to the newly constructed Honouliuli Internment Camp. During the 1970s, over 100 homeless native Hawaiians cleaned up the garbage that filled the island, built homes and took up residence. In the early 1980s, 180 acres of the island were reclaimed by the State of Hawaii for industrial and recreational development. Those who had taken up residence were evicted without compensation. The iconic silhouette of Diamond Head State Monument sits along the Honolulu skyline just beyond Waikiki. Known as Leahi (brow of the tuna) in Hawaiian, the crater was named Diamond Head by 19th century British sailors who thought they discovered diamonds on the crater's slopes. These "diamonds" were actually shiny calcite crystals that had no value. Formed more than 100,000 years ago, the crater was used as a strategic military lookout beginning in the early 1900s and was named a National Natural Landmark in 1968. Today, Diamond Head is a popular hiking destination with panoramic views of Waikiki and Oahu's south shore. (June 23, 2018)
