JUNE 13, 2014: Vancouver, officially the City of Vancouver, is a coastal seaport city on the mainland of British Columbia, Canada. It the eighth largest Canadian municipality. Vancouver is one of the most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities in Canada. The original settlement, named Gastown, grew around the Hastings Mill logging sawmill and a nearby tavern, both established in 1867. Enlarging to become the townsite of Granville, with the announcement that the railhead would reach the site it was renamed "Vancouver" and incorporated as a city in 1886. As of 2009, Port Metro Vancouver is the busiest and largest port in Canada, and the most diversified port in North America. Vancouver is consistently named as one of the top five worldwide cities for livability and quality of life, and the Economist Intelligence Unit acknowledged it as the first city to rank among the top-ten of the world's most liveable cities for five consecutive years.

    "The Adventures of Raven" was created using Western Red Cedar by Nathan Paul Jackson, who is a Native American Tlingit born in 1938. Nathan's artwork tries to maintain the traditional Tlingit style, as shown in early carvings, pre-1900. This piece has some contemporary elements, particularly in using a whale instead of a killer whale. For this commission, he wanted to find a good Tlingit story and put it into a carving. He came up with the Raven, an important figure in Tlingit legend. The story, which comes from the Tlingit traditions recorded by Edward L. Keithahn (62:89, 90), shows how Yethl the Raven was always trying to outsmart people. According to one of many versions, a magician had the sun, moon, and stars boxed up in his closely guarded house.
