The photo of this Poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima) was taken early in the morning before the sun dried up the dew.The Poinsettia is a favorite flower in the United States with its beautiful, red, star-shape. It is called the "Flame Leaf" in Central America or "Flower of the Holy Night" and was brought here over a hundred years ago by Dr. Joel Poinsett, our first ambassador to Mexico. (January 22, 2005)

Mona Lavender

Mona Lavender (Plectranthus hybrida) was bred by one of the horticulturists at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden in South Africa, Roger Jaques, in the late 1990s. It was a fairly long process involving much hand pollination and raising many thousands of seedlings, back crossing and raising many more thousands of seedlings - each time selecting out the best, most attractive individuals to go through to the next round of breeding. But the efforts seem to have paid off as now there is a magnificent plant that is sure to be a popular garden plant all around the world. (May 13, 2005)
