My Garden

When I first moved into my townhouse in 1988, the backyard, which is rather small, was covered with grass and had a very small tree in the middle of it. I inquired about the tree and found out that it was definitely NOT suitable for a very small backyard. So, my dad (who was an avid gardener and had the greenest thumb of anybody I know) and I began a very long, back-breaking task of pulling up all of the grass and removing the tree. That wasn't bad enough . . . the so-called "dirt" was a mixture of coral and clay. But - little by little and a couple of years later (my folks would only come down during the winter), we managed to plant a little garden. Everything I do in my backyard is in his honor and memory of my dad :) It continues to be a "work in progress."

My dad made this birdhouse years ago. After he died, I "moved" it down to Miami and there it sits. I suppose I should repaint it . . . but after all these years, it has so much character that I hesitate to do anything to it. Going forward, it will always be #1 in the gallery - afterall, not only did my dad love working with his hands AND have an incredibly green thumb, but he was also a photographer . . . Happy Father's Day, Dad ;) (April 13, 2006)

Garden fun . . . (February 17, 2008) The first garden gnomes were made in Gräfenroda, a town known for its ceramics in Thuringia, Germany in the mid-1800s. Phillip Griebel produced gnomes based on local myths as a way for people to enjoy the stories of the gnomes' willingness to help in the garden at night. Garden gnomes have become a popular accessory in many gardens. They are often the target of pranks, known collectively as gnoming: people have been known to return garden gnomes "to the wild," most notably France's "Front de Liberation des Nains de Jardins" and Italy's "MALAG" (Garden Gnome Liberation Front). Some kidnapped garden gnomes have been sent on trips around the world (the travelling gnome prank, which became the basis for Travelocity's "Roaming Gnome"). The practice of stealing garden gnomes is also sometimes referred to as "Gnome Hunting."

Yard work was finished for the day and all the new plantings had been watered. As Mother Nature would have it . . . she opened up her skies and it began to rain. Oh well . . . I'm sure the plants were very happy :) (September 4, 2005)
