With a range that spans five continents, including much of North America, the Black-crowned Night-Heron is the most widespread heron in the world.

Though widespread in wetland habitats, the retiring, nocturnal Black-crowned Night Neron is observed less often than are diurnal herons and egrets. Night-herons forage mostly between dusk and dawn but will also take prey during the day.
