Heading away from Koenig Distillery & Winery, we stopped to take pictures of the Snake River and I saw this little guy dancing and prancing around.

A shorebird you can see without going to the beach, Killdeer are graceful plovers common to lawns, golf courses, athletic fields, driveways, parking lots, and gravel-covered roofs, as well as pastures, fields, sandbars and mudflats.

These tawny birds run across the ground in spurts, stopping with a jolt every so often to check their progress, or to see if they’ve startled up any insect prey. Their voice, a far-carrying, excited kill-deer, is a common sound even after dark, often given in flight as the bird circles overhead on slender wings.

This species is one of the least water-associated of all shorebirds.

This is a native species in Singapore, where it is known by the Malay names Kampung/Cerang. Once very common in the 1920s, it was pushed to near extinction by the 1970s, largely due to the introduction of mynahs, illegal poaching, and the disappearance of its natural habitat in the face of rapid urbanisation. Attempts to reintroduce the bird were conducted in the 1980s, but the species remains vulnerable and hence protected by law.

It is a commonly found species in Hong Kong and Bangladesh, where it is the national bird.
