Florida > Denise  > Travel > Florida: Walt Disney World > Animal Kingdom / April 11, 2006
Disney's Animal Kingdom Park opened to the public on Earth Day, April 22, 1998. The slogan "Nahtazu" is clearly evident from the moment that you enter this unique destination. It's so much more than a traditional zoo. Great care has been taken to transport guests to exotic locales within it's lush confines. You'll encounter wildlife from all the corners of the earth, enjoy exciting shows, experience the thrill rides that you've come to expect as part of your Disney vacation, and leave with a renewed respect for this planet and its inhabitants.

The underlying theme of the Animal Kingdom Park is conservation and preservation. As Walt Disney once said: "I have learned from the animal world, and what everyone will learn who studies it is, a renewed sense of kinship with the earth and all its inhabitants."

Disney World - Animal Kingdom - African Spoonbill (Platalea alba)

The African Spoonbill is a long-legged wading bird. Its height is 90 cm (36"). Its body is predominantly white, except for its red legs, face, and bill. Its wing is 365-403 mm long. This bird can be easily identified by its uniquely spoon-shaped bill. At birth, the African Spoonbill's bill does not resemble a spoon. It is born with a short beak, that gradually develops into its spoon-like shape. It usually resembles a spoon right before it is time to leave its nest. Both the male and female birds are similar in appearance.

Disney World - Animal Kingdom - Lesser Flamingo (Phoenicopterus minor)

The Lesser Flamingo is the most abundant of all flamingos. They have stilt-like legs and stand at about 40 inches tall. Lesser Flamingos are usually pink in color. The juveniles tend to remain a grayish color until they are mature (which can take up to two years).

Lesser Flamingos spend their time eating, preening their feathers, resting, and bathing. They can bathe their entire bodies in shallow fresh water! This flamingo has few predators because of the environment in which it lives. It is said that the flamingos greatest predator is man, because the flamingos are most vulnerable to habitat change and exploitation. Lesser flamingos are the smallest of the four flamingoes, but they retain the characteristic flamingo shape with long legs, a long neck, a bent bill, and a large body.
