When you visit Thomas A. Edison's winter homes, you enter a world unlike any you have ever seen. The furnishings and architecture of these gracious, rambling buildings are reminiscent of a bygone era; yet there are many innovations which we do not have in the most modern of homes.

Denise > There is a HUGE banyan tree at the entrance of the property.  It was a gift from Harvey Firestone in 1925. At that time, it was four feet tall and 2 inches wide.  Today, it is the largest banyan tree in the United States, with the tree's aerial roots circumference at more than 400 feet.   (January 22, 2005)

Denise > In 1885, Thomas Edison first visited Florida. He purchased property along the Caloosahatchee River and built a vacation home. The vernacular structure, completed in 1886 and dubbed "Seminole lodge" by the Edisons, served as a winter retreat and work place for the prolific inventor until his death in 1931.
