There is a HUGE banyan tree at the entrance of the property.  It was a gift from Harvey Firestone in 1925. At that time, it was four feet tall and 2 inches wide.  Today, it is the largest banyan tree in the United States, with the tree's aerial roots circumference at more than 400 feet.

Thomas Edison first visited Florida in 1885. He purchased property along the Caloosahatchee River and built a vacation home. The vernacular structure, completed in 1886 and dubbed "Seminole lodge" by the Edisons, served as a winter retreat and work place for the prolific inventor until his death in 1931.
